Composite bonding in Bushey at Caspian Dental Clinic is one of the most conservative ways to improve the look of your front teeth. Tooth-coloured composite resin is applied to the tooth, shaped by hand and polished so it blends in with your natural teeth.
Because it usually needs little or no drilling, your natural tooth stays largely intact. It’s sometimes called direct composite veneers or edge bonding, and it costs from £250 per tooth.
What composite bonding can fix
- Chips and small breaks, such as a corner knocked off a front tooth
- Small gaps, including a gap between the two front teeth
- Uneven or worn edges that make a smile look ragged
- Minor shape changes, such as making a short tooth a little longer or a narrow tooth a little wider
- Small marks or patches of discolouration on the surface of a tooth
When bonding isn’t the right choice
Bonding can’t move teeth, so it won’t correct crowding; clear aligners may help instead. It’s less suited to large changes in shape or colour, heavily broken teeth, or a strong bite or grinding habit, where porcelain or a crown may last longer. Any decay or gum disease needs treating first, and suitability is always confirmed at an examination.
Whiten first if you’d like a brighter shade
Composite doesn’t whiten. If you’re thinking about teeth whitening, it’s usually best to do it before bonding so the composite can be matched to your new shade. It’s normal to wait a couple of weeks after whitening, to let the colour settle, before bonding.
Composite bonding in Bushey, step by step
Consultation and assessment
We examine your teeth and gums, talk about what you’d like to change, and explain whether bonding is suitable, what it can achieve and the alternatives. For more involved cases, study models (from £500) help us plan the shape in advance.
Shade matching
We choose composite shades to match your teeth, sometimes layering more than one to copy the natural translucency at the edges.
Preparing the surface
The tooth is cleaned and treated with a mild gel and bonding agent so the composite can grip. Because there’s usually little or no drilling, many people don’t need an injection.
Layering and shaping
Composite is built up in thin layers, each one hardened before the next. Dr Kimia shapes each tooth by hand to suit your smile.
Polishing and bite check
The bonding is refined, polished to a natural sheen and checked against your bite. Treatment is usually completed in one visit, with the time depending on how many teeth are involved.
“Finding a real craftsman is always difficult, whatever the trade. Very caring and skillful dentist…”

How long does composite bonding last?
With good care, bonding typically lasts several years. Composite isn’t as hard or stain-resistant as porcelain, so over time it can:
- pick up stains from tea, coffee, red wine or smoking
- chip, especially at thin edges or if you bite hard objects
- lose its shine and need re-polishing
The upside is that composite can usually be polished, repaired or added to without starting again. Eventually it will need replacing, so it’s worth factoring maintenance into your decision.
Composite bonding vs porcelain veneers
| Feature | Composite bonding | Porcelain veneers |
|---|---|---|
| From | £250 per tooth | £1,000 per tooth |
| Tooth preparation | Usually little or none | A thin layer of enamel removed; irreversible |
| Visits | Usually one, after assessment | Several, including planning and temporaries |
| How it’s made | Built directly on the tooth | Made in a dental laboratory |
| Staining | Can stain over time | Resists staining well |
| Typical lifespan | Several years with maintenance | Often 10–15 years with good care |
| Repairs | Usually repairable in the chair | A chipped veneer may need replacing |

Does composite bonding hurt?
Most patients find bonding comfortable. If some shaping of the tooth is needed, or you’d simply feel more at ease, we make sure you’re numb before we start. If dental visits make you anxious, tell us and we’ll go at your pace.

Aftercare for bonded teeth
- For the first day or two, go easy on strongly coloured food and drink such as coffee, tea, red wine and curry.
- Don’t bite nails, pens or ice, or open packets with your teeth.
- Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth daily.
- Keep up with check-ups and hygiene visits, where your bonding can be checked and polished.
- If you grind your teeth, a night guard (from £350) can help protect your bonding; read more about teeth grinding.

Composite bonding FAQs
How much does composite bonding cost?
At Caspian Dental Clinic, composite bonding starts from £250 per tooth. Your total depends on how many teeth are treated and how complex each one is, and is confirmed before treatment.
How long does composite bonding last?
Typically several years with good care and regular maintenance. It can stain or chip over time, but it can usually be polished or repaired rather than replaced straight away.
Does composite bonding damage your teeth?
Bonding usually needs little or no drilling, so very little natural tooth is lost, which makes it one of the most conservative cosmetic options. The surface is lightly treated so the composite can grip.
Can composite bonding be whitened?
No. Composite keeps its colour, so if you’d like whiter teeth, whiten first and we’ll match the bonding to your new shade. If bonding picks up surface stains, a polish can often help.
Can bonding close the gap between my front teeth?
Small gaps can often be closed by adding composite to the sides of the teeth. If a gap is large, closing it with composite alone may make the teeth look too wide, so straightening first may give a better result.
Is composite bonding the same as veneers?
Composite bonding is sometimes called direct composite veneers. It’s built directly onto your tooth, usually in one visit, whereas porcelain veneers are made in a laboratory and need a thin layer of enamel removed.
