Dental hygiene appointments in Bushey

A hygiene appointment, which is what many people call seeing the hygienist, is a professional clean that removes the hardened tartar and staining your toothbrush can’t shift. At Caspian Dental Clinic, dental hygiene and teeth cleaning in Bushey is linked to your check-ups, so what we see at your examination shapes the care you get at your clean.

Regular cleaning helps keep your gums healthy, freshens your breath and leaves teeth feeling smooth. It’s also a good time to get practical, personal advice on how to clean your teeth at home.

If your gums show signs of deeper problems, a standard clean may not be enough. We’ll explain whether gum disease treatment would help instead.

What happens at your hygiene visit

  1. A quick review

We look at your gums, note any bleeding or tender areas, and ask about your cleaning routine and any sensitivity.

  2. Removing tartar

Tartar (hardened plaque) is carefully removed from around your teeth and just under the gumline, where bacteria collect and irritate the gums.

  3. Polishing or air polishing

Your teeth are polished to remove surface stain and leave a smooth finish that plaque finds harder to stick to. With a Diamond Clean, we also use an air polisher.

  4. Advice for home

We show you where plaque is building up and suggest brushing and between-teeth cleaning techniques that suit your mouth.

Diamond Clean with air polisher

Our Diamond Clean (from £120) adds air polishing to your clean. An air polisher uses a fine powder, air and water spray to lift staining and biofilm, the sticky layer of bacteria that builds up into plaque. It can reach stain between teeth and along the gumline that a traditional polish finds harder to remove.

It can suit people with stubborn staining from coffee, tea, red wine or smoking. Air polishing isn’t suitable for everyone, for example some people with certain breathing conditions, so we check your medical history first.

“Amazing! The dentist managed to get really tough horrible coffee stains and my teeth came out shiny and back to their white colour! She was careful and gentle and professional.”

Bear in mind that air polishing removes surface staining only. It won’t change the natural shade of your teeth, so if you’d like them lighter than they naturally are, teeth whitening is the option to discuss.

Hygiene visits and your gum health

Plaque that sits along the gumline causes gingivitis: red, puffy gums that bleed when you brush. At this stage it’s reversible with professional cleaning and good daily care. Once plaque hardens into tartar, though, only a professional clean can remove it.

Left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, where the bone and fibres that hold your teeth in place are slowly damaged. Regular hygiene visits, alongside good home care, are one of the most effective ways to reduce that risk.

“Dr Kimia did an excellent job at deep cleaning the teeth. She was very friendly and I was very comfortable throughout the treatment process.”

Does a scale and polish hurt?

Most people find a clean comfortable, though you may feel some scraping, vibration or a little sensitivity, especially if there’s a lot of tartar or your gums are inflamed. Tell us if anything feels uncomfortable: we can pause, slow down and talk about options such as local anaesthetic if your gums are particularly sensitive.

Afterwards, your gums may bleed a little or feel tender for a day or two, and teeth can feel more sensitive to cold for a short while, particularly after heavy tartar has been removed. This usually settles quickly. If you feel anxious about dental visits, tell us and we’ll take breaks whenever you need.

How often should you have your teeth cleaned?

There’s no fixed rule. Some people benefit from a clean every few months, others less often. It depends on how quickly tartar builds up, the health of your gums, and risk factors such as smoking and diabetes. We’ll recommend a frequency at your dental check-up and review it over time.

Looking after your teeth between visits

  • Brush twice a day for about two minutes, including last thing at night, with a fluoride toothpaste (1,350–1,500ppm fluoride for adults).
  • Spit out after brushing but don’t rinse, so the fluoride stays on your teeth for longer.
  • Clean between your teeth once a day with interdental brushes or floss. We can help you choose the right size.
  • Cut down on how often you have sugary food and drinks, and keep them to mealtimes where you can.
  • If you smoke, stopping helps your gums, reduces staining and improves how well your gums respond to treatment.
  • If your gums bleed, keep brushing gently. Bleeding is usually a sign of inflammation, not a reason to stop.

Dental hygiene and teeth cleaning questions

How much is a scale and polish in Bushey?

At Caspian Dental Clinic, a 30-minute hygiene appointment is from £100, and a Diamond Clean with air polisher is from £120. Fees are subject to review and depend on what’s needed, and we’ll confirm the cost before we start.

Is a hygiene appointment the same as seeing the hygienist?

It’s the same kind of care: removing plaque and tartar, polishing away staining and giving you personal advice for home. At our practice, hygiene appointments are linked to your check-ups, so your gum health is looked after as part of one joined-up plan.

Will a clean make my teeth whiter?

A clean removes surface staining, so teeth often look brighter and feel smoother afterwards. It won’t change the natural colour of your teeth, though. If you’d like a lighter shade, ask us about teeth whitening.

Can a scale and polish damage my teeth?

A professional clean carried out properly doesn’t harm healthy enamel. Occasionally, removing heavy tartar reveals small gaps or receded gums that the tartar was covering, or exposes sensitive root surfaces. This isn’t caused by the clean, and we’ll explain it if it happens.

How often should I see the hygienist?

It varies from person to person. People with healthy gums may need a clean less often, while those with gum disease, diabetes or a smoking habit usually benefit from more frequent visits. We’ll recommend an interval that suits you.

Why do my gums bleed when I brush?

Bleeding gums are most often a sign of gingivitis, caused by plaque along the gumline. Keep brushing gently and cleaning between your teeth, and book a check-up or hygiene appointment so we can find the cause and help it settle.
